The political world is mourning the loss of Mia Love, the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress as a Republican. Love, who was just 49 years old, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Her family announced the heartbreaking news on her X (formerly Twitter) account Sunday night,
expressing their gratitude for the profound impact she had on their lives and the lives of many others.
“She was in her home surrounded by family. In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward,” her family wrote.
Her passing marks the end of an extraordinary journey—one filled with resilience, ambition, and an unwavering commitment to public service.
A Trailblazer in American Politics
Mia Love made history when she was elected to represent Utah’s 4th Congressional District in 2014. Serving from 2015 to 2019, she was not only a powerful voice in Congress but also an inspiration to many,
breaking barriers in a political landscape where Black conservative women were rarely seen.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed his grief over her passing, calling her a “true trailblazer and visionary leader.”
“Mia inspired countless Utahns through her courage, grace, and unwavering belief in the American dream. Her legacy leaves a lasting, positive impact on our state. We will miss her deeply.”
Mia Love’s Battle with Brain Cancer
In 2022, Mia Love was diagnose with glioblastoma brain cancer (GBM)—one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of brain cancer. Patients with GBM typically have a survival rate of just 10% beyond five years, with an average life expectancy of only one and a half to two years after diagnosis.
Despite the grim prognosis, Love remained hopeful and determined. In May 2023, she spoke on CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper about her battle with the disease. She revealed that she had been undergoing immunotherapy as part of a clinical trial at The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University since August 2023.
Even with the difficult odds, Mia Love focused on her faith and scientific advancements in search of a cure.
“I was looking for a cure in my faith and in science. Funny thing is, my patriarchal blessing said you will have a long and prosperous life, a rich and rewarding life, so long as you decide to remain in public service.”
After leaving Congress, Mia Love transitioned into media, where she became a respected political commentator for CNN and a frequent guest on ABC’s The View. Her analysis and perspective brought fresh insight into political debates,
proving that her influence extended beyond elected office.
