S. Jaishankar’s UNGA speech
SHARE

At the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a powerful speech highlighting Pakistan’s duplicity on cross-border terrorism and its hostile actions against India. The speech not only showcased India’s firm stance but also sent a clear message: Pakistan’s actions will have consequences. One of the key takeaways from S. Jaishankar’s UNGA speech was India’s response to Pakistan’s manipulative tactics, especially with regard to Kashmir and the Indus Water Treaty.

Jaishankar’s Response to Pakistan at UNGA

In S. Jaishankar’s UNGA speech, he emphasized that India’s response to Pakistan is not confined to just military options. He referenced the Indian Army’s 2016 surgical strikes in occupied Kashmir as a reminder of India’s resolve. The speech came just after India formally ask for a modification of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, a treaty that has been severely impact by Pakistan’s persistent cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan has yet to respond to India’s notice on August 30, 2024, regarding the Indus Water Treaty.

Jaishankar made it clear that Pakistan’s attempt to escalate tensions by linking international conflicts like Gaza to Kashmir was not only inappropriate but also a sign of desperation. S. Jaishankar’s UNGA speech effectively dismantled Pakistan’s narrative and underscored that Islamabad’s GDP is now being measured in terms of religious radicalization rather than economic development.

Pakistan’s Double Game

In recent years, Pakistan has played a double game, where on one hand it talks about peace, and on the other, it continues to sponsor cross-border terrorism in Kashmir. Jaishankar’s speech highlighted this hypocrisy, calling out Pakistan’s tactics on multilateral platforms. Pakistan’s UN envoy, Munir Akram, has been one of the most vocal anti-India figures, often using his position to push Islamist narratives. However, S. Jaishankar’s UNGA speech demonstrated that India will not tolerate these double standards any longer.

Jaishankar’s speech also came in the context of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s attempt to link the Gaza conflict with Kashmir. Jaishankar, in a strategic move, asked a junior diplomat to debunk this claim, before delivering his own direct and sharp message. He pointed out that Pakistan’s economic downfall is a direct result of its state-sponsored radicalization, and India will no longer respond meekly to such provocations. According to S. Jaishankar’s UNGA speech, India is focused on reclaiming occupied Kashmir and neutralizing Pakistan’s terror apparatus.

The Indus Water Treaty and Cross-Border Terrorism

Another critical point in S. Jaishankar’s UNGA speech was India’s intention to modify the Indus Water Treaty. The treaty, signed in 1960, grants Pakistan certain water rights,

but India has argued that Pakistan’s continued sponsorship of cross-border terrorism undermines the treaty. India’s move to seek changes in the treaty sends a clear message that diplomatic and economic consequences will follow if Pakistan continues its hostile actions. The Indus Water Treaty has been a critical lifeline for Pakistan,

and any modifications could significantly impact its economy.

Pakistan’s Role in Protests Over Hezbollah Leader’s Killing

Jaishankar’s speech also touched on Pakistan’s involvement in inciting protests in Jammu and Kashmir following the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah by Israel. This highlights Pakistan’s continued meddling in the region and its ongoing support for radicalized elements in Kashmir. As Jaishankar pointed out in his speech,

cross-border terrorism by Pakistan remains the single biggest obstacle to any meaningful dialogue between the two nations.

Conclusion

S. Jaishankar’s UNGA speech was a clear indication that India will no longer play along with Pakistan’s double game. With the modification of the Indus Water Treaty and India’s hard stance on cross-border terrorism,

it is evident that Pakistan’s provocations will not go unchallenged.

Jaishankar’s reference to “karma” reducing Pakistan to a pauper state encapsulate the message perfectly—Pakistan’s actions have led to its current downfall,

and India is prepared to respond in kind.

As Jaishankar prepares for the upcoming SCO summit in Islamabad,

the tone has  set: India will be sharp, assertive, and unyielding.
